Congratulations on your beautiful new family member! Your kitten will give you many years of loving companionship and joyful times. As your kitten grows to adulthood, how you take care of and train him/her will determine if they grow up to be loving and trusting or aggressive, shy, and destructive. While each cat has his/her own personality, there are certain factors that will influence them based on the pet parents themselves!

It is recommended that you take your new kitten to the veterinarian within the first 24 - 72 hours of adoption to ensure they are healthy and to quickly take care of any adverse health conditions. Preventing disease will be your primary goal of this first visit. Tracy Animal Hospital will also let you know the recommended number of vet visits for new kittens.

FOR KITTENS AGE 8-16 WEEKS

COMPREHENSIVE EXAM

We perform your kitten's 1st annual exam which includes a head to tail check: eyes, ears, mouth, heart & lung sound, skin & coat health, etc. We'll discuss any concerns that you may have as well as go over any findings.

Vaccinations

A series of vaccines and boosters are given to your kitten at 8 weeks, 12 weeks, and 16 weeks for feline rabies, feline distemper, feline leukemia 

FECAL EXAMINATION 

A fecal exam is a microscopic evaluation of feces which allows us to screen for internal parasites. If we find intestinal parasites during this screening, we can deworm your kitten.

Why does my kitten need to come in for exams and vaccines?

​Bringing your new kitten to the veterinarian is a proactive approach to their healthcare. Just as you have your human baby examined by a pediatrician right after birth, it is equally important that your baby feline is checked by the vet to discover any concerns or verify its healthy condition. Like humans, kittens need their vaccinations to protect them from potential diseases they could contract. We provide feline rabies, distemper, and leukemia vaccinations. Unbeknownst to many cat owners, many kittens are born with parasites that they inherited from their mothers (in utero or through their milk). We also provide a fecal examination which evaluates the kitten's feces, so the vet can screen for internal parasites. If your new little one does have parasites, the vet will deworm your furry baby, so they don't have to suffer the ravages that parasites bring. Deworming your kitten also protects your whole family.

Why do I need to microchip my kitten?

Once your new companion has reached eight months old, it is a good time to get him/ her microchipped. It is a simple procedure. A needle is used to insert the microchip, much like a shot, and it takes only a few seconds for the whole procedure to be done. This rice-size device is detected when scanned at veterinary offices or shelters and indicates who the owner is, giving your kitten the best chance to return home if it ever it gets separated from you. ​

In addition to giving your kitten the best chance at making it back home, microchipping your pet is also a requirement in Harris County.
