This week we successfully completed several surgeries for our pet patients. There are many reasons why dogs or cats need to have surgery including injuries and pets swallowing foreign objects. When these things happen, having the peace of mind that you have a caring, knowledgeable and experienced veterinarian who'll take care of your dog or cat like they were their own is the best assurance any pet parent can have. And keeping these life-saving surgeries at a price that our clients can afford is our way of showing that patient care comes first!

​Jasper's Story

One of the most memorable surgeries this month was for a patient named Jasper.  Jasper is a 10 month old lab puppy who presented to a local emergency clinic for severe vomiting. His vomiting started out infrequently but it slowly turned into a cause for concern, for which his family took him to an emergency clinic. Once there, radiographs or x-rays were taken, and Jasper was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia (or hernia of the diaphragm where the esophagus enters the abdominal cavity) and was recommended to go to a specialist for emergency repair surgery that day.

The nature of this type of hernia of the diaphragm makes it very difficult to repair, and even if successful repair is achieved, it has a higher failure rate after surgery. Once receiving an injection to control his vomiting, Jasper was feeling better overall, so his family elected to wait and bring him to us first thing the next morning. Upon seeing Jasper and his radiographs Dr. Tanner Tracy went over the long list of possible complications and the risky nature of the corrective surgery, A referral to a specialist was offered, but Dr. Tanner Tracy also informed the owners that the surgery could be done at right here at Tracy Animal Hospital. We were able to offer this procedure at almost half of the cost that the specialist would charge. Knowing the risks, Jasper’s family elected to have us perform the surgery. Jasper went home that day feeling well, but by the afternoon started to show worsening clinical signs. His parents brought him back and dropped him off with us for hospitalization until his procedure for the next day. He did well overnight, and both Dr. Rusty Tracy and Dr. Tanner Tracy started surgery first thing the next morning. Upon entering the abdomen, it was discovered that Jasper did in fact have a hernia in his diaphragm, and in a location that was more conducive to successful repair. Our veterinarians successfully closed the hernia and removed the air from around his lungs as our staff made sure that Jasper was doing well under anesthesia. He recovered very well, while receiving plenty of attention (its hard not to love on a 10 month old lab puppy). With Jasper’s age and lack of known trauma, it is likely that his hernia was at least partially congenital in nature. We will probably never know what caused it, or how long he had it, but he is doing well now.
